Independent Study High School

BYU Independent Study high school courses are NCAA-approved. They are comparable to traditional classroom courses in their length, content, and rigor, and they prepare students for academic work at a four-year college or university. Students in these courses also benefit from interaction with teachers, teaching assistants, tutors, advisors, and other support staff as part of this nontraditional educational experience. Credits earned through BYU Independent Study transfer and appear on the student’s school transcript(s).

Independent Study University

College athletes and prospective college athletes from all schools, including BYU, can now enroll and earn credit through BYU Independent Study university-level courses. There are no restrictions in place at this time. Courses are comparable to traditional university classroom courses in their content and rigor. Credit earned through BYU Independent Study is officially recorded on a BYU transcript; your home institution decides how that credit applies to your degree. Maintaining collegiate athletic program (e.g., NCAA, NJCAA, CCAA, CIS, etc.) eligibility is the student-athlete’s responsibility. Always consult your home institution before enrolling to ensure alignment with team, conference, and athletic regulations.
