High School Graduation Reminder

If you are planning to graduate from high school this year, please read this important information regarding your Independent Study high school course.

Following are exceptions to the one-year course completion deadline:

  • Your graduation deadline is sooner.
  • Your course syllabus indicates a shorter deadline.
  • Your school requires you to work within a semester, term, or quarter system.
  • Your scholarship or financial aid source may impose other deadlines.

High School Courses

Our courses are comparable to a university, high school, or middle school semester-length course. They are aligned with the Carnegie Unit system. Most of the high school courses are one-half of 0.5 or a Carnegie Unit, which represents one-half (usually one semester) of a school year’s study in a particular subject. We encourage you to plan to complete your course in a realistic amount of time to get the maximum benefit without rushing through the material.

Once you have completed your coursework and exams, it may take up to three weeks before you receive a notice of course completion (due to mail and grading times).

University Courses

All university course grades are posted on a Brigham Young University transcript. To ensure a course grade will appear within a particular semester or term (for financial aid or graduation deadlines), we must receive all completed coursework and exams (including retakes) by the deadlines below:*

  • Fall 2025: December 3, 2025
  • Winter 2026: April 8, 2026
  • Spring 2026: June 4, 2026
  • Summer 2026: July 30, 2026

*There are no exceptions to these deadlines. However, please note that courses completed before the first day of class of the subsequent semester or term may still appear in the prior semester or term on the transcript.
